Black and Orange Pumpkin Treats

Would you call yourself a traditionalist? I’m not huge on traditions but there are a few that I like. I want to share one of my holiday traditions and how it inspired me to create this delicious fall treat.

I’ve always loved pumpkin pie, favourite pie by a landslide! So, I make an excuse to have this pie at any holiday; Thanksgiving, Christmas and even Easter! We use the same recipe my mom cut out by Edith Adams of the Vancouver Sun YEARS ago for Brandied Pumpkin Pie. I dream about this pie, I used to only eat the filling because I don’t like my moms pie crust. Since my sister and I have grown up a little bit we’ve taken over the pumpkin pie baking duties. I changed the pie crust to a recipe that I like and usually force my little sister into rolling it out (worst job). Pumpkin Pie has the easiest filling and then together we pop the PIES in the oven!

This Thanksgiving was a little different because my mother acted independently and bought a pumpkin pie from Costco… You can imagine the flow of (irrational) emotions; anger, frustration, disappointment, pettiness, disgust and finally retaliation. (No offense to Costco and your very affordable pumpkin pie but it cannot replace what I consider a sacred family tradition)

Since I’m not always that mature and quite stubborn I refused to eat Costco’s pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving and have been searching to fill my pumpkin fix ever since. And thus the Black and Orange Pumpkin Treat was born using advice from 2 recipes(one from Kraft and one from the Food Network) and a little luck!

Crust:

225g of Oreo Mini crumbs

1/3 cup of butter or until you achieve the right texture

Filling:

125g of cream cheese

¼ cup of sugar

1 cup of pure pumpkin

2 Tbsp of all-purpose flour

½ tsp of baking powder

½ tsp of ground cinnamon

¼ tsp of ground nutmeg

½ tsp of vanilla

1 whole egg

1 egg yolk

 

Directions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees

  2. Line 8-inch cake pan with parchment paper. If parchment paper drives you crazy, go ahead and grease your pan!

  3. Blend Oreo Minis in a food processor until fine crumb consistency

  4. Add Oreo crumbs and melted butter in a sauce pan

  5. Spread crust evenly along the bottom on your cake pan

  6. Bake crust for at least 10 minutes

  7. Blend all filling ingredients in a mixing bowl until smooth

  8. Pour filling onto crust evenly

  9. Bake for 30 minutes

  10. Filling should not be completely set

  11. Cool for 2 hours before cutting

  12. Share with loved ones

I hope you have success with this recipe. I brought them to a Halloween party and friends of friends were raving about them! Proud moment for me :) Try them out for your next event or maybe American Thanksgiving.
